Is there any difference between AWD and 4WD?

But simply, no. AWD stands for All Wheel Drive, when power is delivered to all four wheels automatically, and shifts so that you maintain traction even on tricky terrain. The term 4WD or 4x4 has traditionally been applied to more rugged vehicles that spend most of their time off-road, but is essentially the same thing.

I live in the city. Why would I need a 4x4?

If you stick to strictly urban ‘paved’ roads then there’s no reason why you shouldn’t choose a standard two-wheel-drive vehicle. However, as so many different types of vehicles come with 4x4 capability these days, the option isn’t as much of a deal-breaker as it was in previous years. You won’t pay any extra for 4x4 capability either, so it’s worth having it in reserve for that one time when you do need to tackle a more demanding track to get to that glamping site or drive down to the beach.

Are they heavier on fuel?

The addition of 4x4 capability really doesn’t have any adverse effect on your fuel consumption, and indeed, modern crossovers like the Nissan X Trail or the Nissan Kicks are surprisingly frugal when it comes to Ltr/km numbers. 

The slightly higher ride and stiffer suspension give 4x4 crossovers better road handling and stability, so you don’t get that ‘wallowing’ sensation when cornering that the first-generation early SUVs tended to have.

While crossovers are an ideal choice for families and those who spend most of their time driving on smooth roads, full-blown SUVs are designed to tackle anything the scenery can throw at them. In this instance, 4x4 capability is essential for clambering over rocky terrain, tackling steep inclines, and staying in control on those descents down towering dunes in the desert.
